TOWER BRIDGE

COMBINE SKILL AND IMAGINATION - Art and science intertwine

Type: Bascule Bridge
Total Length: 286.5m
Main Span: 79m
Height of foot bridges: 43m
Completed: 1894

Named after its two impressive towers, the Tower Bridge is one of London's best known landmarks. When the Thames was still a major artery for commerce, the middle of the bridge would be raised about 50 times a week, to allow large vessels to pass. Now, it is only raised about four to five times a week.

The Tower Bridge is a successful marriage of art and science with its steel structure faced with decorative masonry. It manages to unite a concern for history and the application of modern building technology.
